Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Rosary of Las Lajas

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Las Lajas is one of the most beautiful and iconic places in Colombia. It is located in the department of Nariño, very close to the border with Ecuador. The current construction began in 1916 and was completed in 1949, although the site had already been a place of pilgrimage since the 18th century. Legend has it that in 1754, an Indigenous woman named María Mueses and her daughter witnessed an apparition of the Virgin Mary on one of the stone walls of the canyon. Since then, the site has become a very important spiritual center for thousands of believers.

I had the opportunity to visit this sanctuary with my family last year. We traveled early in the morning, and when we arrived, the landscape left us speechless. We walked across the bridge that connects the sanctuary to the mountains, took many pictures, and also went inside the church, where we admired the stained glass windows, the architectural details, and the image of the Virgin engraved in the rock. I felt very moved and at peace. It was a unique experience that I will always remember.

MY TRAVEL EXPERIENCE

Last year, I had the opportunity to visit the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Las Lajas with my family. We traveled very early in the morning because we wanted to make the most of the day. During the trip, we admired the beautiful landscape of the mountains and rivers that surround the Nariño region. When we finally arrived at the sanctuary, I was amazed by its location, right between a deep canyon and surrounded by nature.

First, we walked across the bridge that connects the sanctuary with the rest of the path. From there, we took many photos because the view was stunning. Then, we entered the church and observed the colorful stained glass windows, the Gothic details of the construction, and the image of the Virgin that, according to legend, appeared on the rock. I was very struck by the faith of the people there; many were praying, lighting candles, or leaving offerings.

Later, we went down some stairs that led to the river that passes under the bridge. From there, we took photos of the sanctuary from a different angle. Afterward, we bought souvenirs like keychains, prayer cards, and rosaries, and we also tried some typical sweets from the region.

Throughout the visit, I felt very moved and peaceful. It was a very special spiritual and cultural experience. I really enjoyed learning about such an important place for so many people and discovering its history. Without a doubt, it was a trip I will always remember fondly
